Big Joanie are a London-based Black feminist punk band who have spent the past decade innovating classic riot grrrl music and post-punk styles for our current musical moment. They have opened internationally for legends such as Bikini Kill (coming to the Fillmore on April 4 and 5) and Sleater-Kinney, but their May 22 gig at Songbyrd marks their first D.C. show. In a review of their 2022 album, Back Home, Pitchfork called their music “an act of resistance, drawing on riot grrrl’s raucous energy and ’60s girl-group harmonies to carve out space for Black feminist punks in London and beyond.” In the “beyond” space of D.C., Big Joanie are going to rock Northeast with their distinct brand of feminist punk rock. See you in the pit. Big Joanie play at 7 p.m. on May 22 at Songbyrd. songbyrddc.com. $16–$18.
