In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Kennedy Center once again hosts its annual women in comedy event on March 9. This year builds upon the success of past RIOT! showcases and brings yet another fabulous cast of hilarious women to the District: Abbott Elementary’s Janelle James; queer comedian and podcast host Ali Kolbert; and the illustrious Sam Jay, whose resume includes writing for Saturday Night Live (she’s the show’s first Black lesbian writer), starring in and co-writing HBO’s PAUSE with Sam Jay, and creating the 2020 Netflix special 3 in the Morning. Atsuko Okatsuka, one of Variety’s Top 10 Comics to Watch of 2022, rounds out this year’s headliners. “This lineup, which our team painstakingly curated, is something that comedy buffs and casual audience members will both enjoy,” Kate Villa, the Kennedy Center’s Director of Comedy and Institutional Programming, tells City Paper. “We’ve asked some of our favorite stand-ups to be part of this year’s lineup for a truly one-night-only experience.” Villa hopes to make fans out of casual audience members and help to build the platform of these standout stand-ups beyond New York and L.A. But above all, she hopes everyone will have fun. “I hope our audience at RIOT! will get what we strive to provide in all our comedy programming: a fun, funny, and memorable night at the Kennedy Center.” RIOT! Funny Women Stand Up starts at 8 p.m. on March 9 at the Kennedy Center. kennedy-center.org. $29–$69.
