Award-winning poet Naomi Shihab Nye has been selected by the Folger Poetry Board to be this year’s distinguished poet reader. Nye will take the stage at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on May 10, where she will read both her own work and work from her favorite poets, as has become an annual tradition. Previous poets honored have included Rita Dove, Seamus Heaney, Gwendolyn Brooks, Octavio Paz, and more. Nye is a professor of creative writing at Texas State University, and has written six poetry collections for adults and numerous books for children, as well. She’s won a long list of awards, including the National Book Critics Circle Lifetime Achievement Award, four Pushcart Prizes, and a Guggenheim Fellowship.
