Chef José Andrés is a well known figure in the D.C. area. Leader of countless beloved restaurants, such as Jaleo, Zaytinya, Oyamel, the James Beard Award-winning chef also faced a high-profile legal battle with Donald Trump after backing out of a restaurant deal with the former president’s hotel. But in addition to his restaurant endeavors, Andrés is engaged in humanitarian work through his organization World Central Kitchen. The nonprofit provides meals in response to climate and community crises across the globe. And now, they are releasing their first cookbook, which Andrés will be discussing at Sixth and I on Oct. 1. World Central Kitchen Cookbook: Feeding Humanity, Feeding Hope is a collection of recipes inspired by the many people and places the organization has cooked for following disasters. Split into chapters that reflect WCK’s values (such as Hope and Urgency), the Feeding Humanity isn’t just recipes born from disaster. The book also includes narratives from the chefs and volunteers on the front lines, as well as recipes from famous WCK supporters including Michelle Obama and Meghan Markle. José Andrés speaks at 6 p.m. on Oct. 1 at Sixth and I (and virtually). sixthandi.org. $12–$45. —Hannah Docter-Loeb
