The Tony Award-winning musical adaptation of cartoonist Alison Bechdel’s 2006 graphic memoir comes to 14th Street’s Studio Theatre this June. Bechdel, of the Bechdel Test fame, wrote Fun Home about her experiences navigating her own queerness and that of her closeted gay father. It is a challenging and powerful story to watch play out as it dares the audience to question their understanding of themselves, their identities, and their families. The musical, which debuted in 2015, was Broadway’s first to feature a lesbian protagonist, which is hard to believe considering how overdue queer women are for representation, but at least it’s here now. For local musical lovers, Fun Home concludes a jam-packed 2022-23 season from Studio. Fun Home runs June 28 through July 30 at Studio Theatre. studiotheatre.org. $50–$95.
