Antonio Dockery was found unresponsive in his cell in the D.C. Jail’s Central Cell Block, where arrestees are initially booked and held before their court appearances, earlier this week.

Department of Corrections officers found Dockery unresponsive in his cell around 3:15 a.m. Monday, according to a notice posted on the department’s website. Officers and emergency medical staff performed “immediate on-site life saving measures,” but Dockery was pronounced dead at 4:10 a.m.

DOC and D.C. police are investigating the death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. A DOC spokesperson tells City Paper there is no further information available as of Wednesday morning.

Dockery is at least the fifth person to die while in DOC custody this year. Larry Watson, 41, died Sept. 26 after he collapsed in the day room of the jail’s Central Detention Facility.

Darrow Johnson, 34, died Aug. 19 after he was stabbed by another jail resident, according to DOC. Marktwan Hargraves, 24, died July 20 after he was found unresponsive in his cell in CDF. A DOC announcement says he was administered NARCAN, the opioid antidote, along with other lifesaving efforts before he was pronounced dead at 2:32 a.m. And Stephan Bragg, 46, suddenly collapsed Jan. 24 in the jail’s reception center due to a “medical emergency,” according to DOC. He was pronounced dead at a hospital the following day. The medical examiner’s office determined that he had a blood clot and died of natural causes.

Eight people died while in DOC custody in 2022.
