Update 2/14/2022: The restaurants and bars on this list published over the summer made moves to require proof of vaccination before the city’s mandate took effect on Jan. 15. After pausing updates given every hospitality establishment was required to check for proof of vaccination for indoor dining, City Paper will once again be updating this list. That’s because after just one month, Mayor Muriel Bowser decided to rescind the indoor vaccine mandate (effective Feb. 15). Details and reaction here. Those bars and restaurants that plan to continue requiring proof of vaccination to dine, and have expressed this clearly, will now be listed with two stars (**) next to their name.

City Paper will regularly update this running list. To be added, send relevant details to LHayes@washingtoncitypaper.com. Proof of vaccination refers to one dose of Johnson & Johnson or two doses of Moderna or Pfizer, unless other wise specified. Many establishments are communicating their proof-of-vaccination policies on social media, so it’s prudent to glance at an establishment’s accounts or website before venturing out for a meal.

Original story:

A number of D.C. cafes, bars, and restaurants will now require customers to provide proof of their vaccination against COVID-19 before they can dine there. Some are offering the option to show a negative COVID-19 test instead.

These decisions come as the new mask mandate from Mayor Muriel Bowser, which requires Washingtonians to wear masks in all indoor settings, takes effect on July 31. The mandate includes bars and restaurants. Customers can remove their masks when actively eating and drinking, but must wear them at all other times. (In practice that’s come to mean when employees approach the table or when moving about the restaurant.)

Diners have already expressed support for policies that reward those who have been vaccinated. Laura Kumin, a Chevy Chase resident in her 60s, says she would like restaurants to publicize when they require their staff and customers to get vaccinated against the virus.

“I really think it’s really important in these times where we’re trying to figure out the [Delta] variant,” Kumin says. “I will reward restaurants that take a stand for vaccination and for public safety.”

Restaurateur Danny Meyer was the first to announce that he would soon require proof of vaccination to dine inside his Navy Yard businesses, Anchovy Social and Maialino Mare. Since he shared the policy, which kicks in Sept. 7, other District businesses have followed suit. Dive bar Ivy and Coney is one of them, “We want to protect our staff and customers,” says co-owner Josh Saltzman. “And we’re done with half measures.”
