Break out the champagne, fire up the go-go band, and get your dancin’ shoes on. Councilmember Vince Gray is getting married.

The Ward 7 lawmaker confirmed to LL his upcoming nuptials to his partner of the past six years, Dawn Kum.

“She’s stuck with me through all of this,” Gray said from the Wilson Building breakfast room following a rousing debate about the shaky deal to build a new hospital in Ward 8. “All of it, the late nights and me being the worst workaholic there is.”

The happy couple hasn’t set a date or picked a venue, and Gray says he hasn’t tapped a best man—minor details. But there is almost sure to be plenty of hand dancing.

Faithful LL readers might remember Kum, who was formerly married to former Department of Health director Ivan Walks and is the founder and CEO of Village Academy of Washington D.C., a school for children with special needs. Around the time of their divorce in 2011, Kum was caught up in a dispute over a $1 million gift from infamous shadow campaign financier Jeff Thompson.

But all that is ancient history now, as Gray and Kum plan their ceremony.

“I’m just amazed anyone would literally want to be married to me,” Gray says. He promises to share photos of the event. Guess that means LL shouldn’t expect a save-the-date.
