On Laika and the Cosmonauts’ The Amazing Colossal Band, lounge music meets the surf sound. The Finnish ensemble, with its Farfisa organ, twangy lead guitars, and languid drums, suggests a cross between Esquivel and the Ventures. Amazing‘s standouts include “Tantrum,” which features bongo drums, spy-movie-soundtrack bass runs, and the cheesy organ trills of keyboardist/guitarist Matti Pitsinki; “The A-Treatment,” a composition that mixes sitarlike guitar with funky bass and organ parts; and “Aztec Two-Step,” built around Mikko Lanikinen’s plucky guitar. The disc also contains a superb remake of the theme from The Avengers and a striking surf version of Davie Allen and the Arrows’ “Skater Dater.” Though the band is most effective on uptempo cuts, lazier tracks like “Azure Blue” have a haunting, dreamy quality.
