Awkward Sex and the City

There are plenty of Valentine’s Day weekend options in the District—fancy dinners, romantic hotel stays, intimate concerts. But in our extensive research, we’ve only come across one show that promises tales about, “cocaine-infused one night stands to IBS flare ups during cunnilingus.” If this is off-putting, maybe don’t attend Awkward Sex and the City. But if it’s enticing, you may have found your people. The touring show returns to Black Cat after multiple successful stops before the pandemic. Appealing to a forward-thinking audience, Natalie Wall and company have been telling sex positive, true tales of sex and sex-related misadventures for nearly a decade. What started in New York in 2014 has continued to draw an audience over the years, because regardless of anything else going on in the world, people people are still hooking up. Awkwardness and hilarity will ensue. The Sex and the City reboot, And Just Like That…, recently aired its season finale. It’s a safe bet that what you’ll hear from storytellers Karolena Theresa, Calvin Cato, Jen Keefe, Jessica Henderson, and Wall will be dirtier—and way more realistic—than anything in the HBO Max series. It’s unlikely you’re going to want to purchase a Peloton after this night of storytelling, but you may be inspired to try other types of cardio. If you’re a fan of the lewder side of This American Life or The Moth, head to 14th Street to get in a romantic mood ahead of the big day. The show starts at 8 p.m. on Feb. 11 at Black Cat, 1811 14th St. NW. blackcatdc.com. $20.
