HO HO WHO: Queen of Christmas Mariah Carey, plus Jennifer Hudson and Ariana Grande. Try to think of a better trio to create the next holiday bop. On Dec. 4, Mariah Carey released a revamped version of “Oh Santa” as part of her Magical Christmas Special on Apple TV, and she brought some serious female musical talent to sing new life into her 2010 hit.

SLEIGH BELLS STILL RINGING: The song has the same Christmas bells, fast-paced tempo, and cheery background vocals of the 2010 version, but the song reaches a new level of harmony and balance with the addition of Hudson and Grande. The backup singers felt overpowering at times in the original version, but adding two talented singers with a developed style brings new excitement to the song. Hudson’s high note is especially good.

WILL SANTA FINALLY MAKE HIM HERS? Mariah urges Santa to “help make [him] mine this Christmas,” making for a catchy but overly-repetitive plea. She wants Santa to “scoop him right down [her] chimney,” but Santa might not be in a position to use his Christmas magic to play Cupid—will Mariah’s man want her back if he is already with someone else? Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas is You” is her crown jewel, but you should probably queue up the latest rendition of “Oh Santa!” while you’re at it.

CHEER FACTOR: 8/10. The song immediately transports me to a Macy’s department store on Black Friday, brimming with the energy of people rushing to buy on discount and excited to start the Christmas season, and the chorus is seared into my brain permanently.
