The Puppet Co., a puppet theater and workshop located in Glen Echo Park, is presenting the 32nd run of its most popular show, The Nutcracker, on video this year. Their version tells Clara’s familiar story with a fairytale twist, introducing other beloved characters with handmade puppets and fantastical scenery. Founded in 1983, The Puppet Co.’s mission is to excite the public about the puppet arts through shows, classes, and workshops. The founding team retired this year, installing two women to helm the playhouse: artistic director Elizabeth Dapo and executive director Toni Goldberg. Renting the puppet show costs $12 on Vimeo, but the theater’s website acknowledges that some of their “puppet watching families have been particularly hard hit during this extraordinary year,” and encourages those who are able to donate to the Nutcracker Fund for families unable to pay the rental fee. Families in need of support to view the show can email firstname.lastname@example.org to request assistance. If the virtual experience leaves you wanting more in the way of puppets, take a stroll through the open grounds of Glen Echo Park and make a stop at The Puppet Co.’s festooned window for an eyeful of holiday cheer. The Nutcracker is available to rent on Vimeo. $12.
