HO HO WHO: Lil Nas X. Rapper. Pop star. Billboard chart topper and history maker. Country Music Association Award winner. The 21-year-old is basically a Gen Z genius. His country-trap single, “Old Town Road,” was No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 100 chart for a record 19 straight weeks. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the popular refrain, “I’m gonna take my horse to the old town road …” I couldn’t even type that out without singing it in my head. Lil Nas X followed that up in 2019 with “Panini,” another catchy platinum single. And now he’s back again with “HOLIDAY,” just in time for, well, the holidays.

ON REPEAT: When I told my friend—a Lil Nas X stan—that I would be writing this, she responded with two ALL CAPS texts: “ITS A FUCKIN BANGER” and “BEEN SINGING IT SINCE THE DAY IT CAME OUT.”

At only 2 minutes and 47 seconds, I ended up watching the music video on repeat several times. The song immediately hooks you. In the video, Lil Nas X plays Santa Claus as he boasts about being on top of the music game. My favorite line? “Pop star, but the rappers still respect me.” The chorus will get stuck in your head. Lil Nas X proves again that he’s not going anywhere.

ANOTHER REMINDER THAT I’M OLD: The music video also serves as a bit of an ad for the PlayStation 5, and in conjunction with the release of the single, the artist held concerts on Roblox that were attended 33 million times. I still don’t know what Roblox is, but I hear it’s an online game popular among the youth. The newest video game console I own is a PlayStation 2, so I might not be the target audience here.

CHEER FACTOR: 9/10. There’s no denying Lil Nas X’s talent. He knows how to make viral music that gets easily drilled into your head. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself singing this song during the holidays—and beyond.
