The Dish: red pizza with pepperoni
The Location: Comet Ping Pong, 5037 Connecticut Ave. NW, (202) 364-0404.
The Price: $9, plus $1 per topping
The Skinny: Between the tables made out to look like the tops of table-tennis tables and folks enjoying a game at the actual table-tennis tables in back, Comet Ping Pong, chef Carole Greenwood‘s new haven near her Buck’s Fishing & Camping, lives up to its name. But are the establishment’s pizzas, which proprietor James Alefantis says are “loosely based” on the classic New Haven style, worthy of Wooster Street titans Pepe’s and Sally’s? Heck if I know. But the oblong pies come with delectably charred edges and tasty, gooey buffalo mozzarella (compliments of Pennsylvania-based herd, according to Alefantis). Though arguably overpriced at 9 bones, each pie is plenty for one person (and no doubt particularly filling after an evening of perfecting your penhold). Toppings runs a buck more apiece; try the pepperoni, which at Comet’s comes with a little extra zing.
