City Paper is not for tourists
The Dish: seviche de camarones
The Location: Don Juan Restaurant & Carryout, Mount Pleasant and Lamont Streets NW. (202) 667-0010.
The Price: $10.95
The Skinny: Situated in the heart of Mount Pleasant, Don Juan sports both an informal, linger-friendly dining room and, around the corner, an even less formal carryout operation. And the Don’s seviche de camarones—in which a sharp blend of flavors (fueled by ingredients like red onions, tomato, and cilantro) contrasts with tender, subtler shrimp—is one of the benefits of a neighborhood that’s refreshingly short on chain eateries. The taste of the concoction may vary a bit from bite to bite, depending on how much of the mix ends up on your fork, but in general, the dish strikes the right balance. While a chain eatery might generate a fuller meal for the $10.95 price tag, it most likely wouldn’t offer the (uncontrived) opportunity to eat the dish in the company of both a disco ball and a mounted deer head.
