In today’s Washington Post story on his proposed legislation regulating minors at clubs, Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham continues his role as the John Lithgow character in a particularly overacted dinner-theater version of Footloose.

Choice Graham Quote No. 1: “What are these kids doing in these places? It’s just dangerous. Pedophiles, violence, anything could happen to them in there.”

Choice Graham Quote No. 2: “If Prince George’s County is removing a problem, the problem isn’t going to just vanish. These people will head to the District of Columbia.”

According to the Post account, club owners wanted minors busted for underage drinking to be charged criminally. Graham feared this would be a deal breaker with his council colleagues. So he flipped a coin to decide whether the clause would remain in his legislation. The club owners won the coin flip.

What do you think? Is a coin flip the best way to legislate? Do you trust a man who believes clubs are potential backdrops for upcoming Dateline features?
