Missing from the Post story today about the health problems caused by car commuting: a remedy for the growing problem. The author quoted a back surgeon who didn’t know “of any sure-fire solution.” How about living in the city?
Obviously, D.C. is often pricier than my former digs on the West Coast (although I pay less for my luxurious Petworth house share than I did for my run-down Seattle one-bedroom). But the who-cares angle of the story is that it’s important for our freaking survival to find ways of getting people to live within mass transit or other non-car-commuting distance of work. Otherwise, we’re just gonna need more back surgeons and stomach staplers.
