A sign that newly confirmed D.C. police Chief Cathy Lanier is firmly in place: A roving team of three MPD officers at the corner of 18th and Columbia NW yesterday afternoon, ticketing their asses off.
As I walked by, there were at least four tickets in progress. One for a violation of the distracted driving law, two for jaywalking, and another—-against a truck driver—-for an offense that I couldn’t quite ascertain. An officer said the primary purpose of the sweep was to enforce pedestrian violations but that the officers will cite whatever violations they encounter.
This is fabulous policing, proof that Lanier is on the case. And yes, I do believe that pedestrians—-myself included—-need to be saved from themselves.
