If Sky Blue Sky, Wilco’s latest, is too Steely Dan for some, Jeff Tweedy doesn’t really seem to care. Last night at Merriweather Post, he took delight (already that’s weird) with the presence of a 6-year-old near the front row, threw out some banter related to “this next number”—-“Hate it Here” wherein Tweedy waxes about changing sheets and mowing the lawn—-and told the audience he was “doing splendid as well.” And at the merch booth: Wilco onesies.
Count me among the uncool who would pick post-rehab dad-rock Wilco over their forays into noise. The kids who like that, though, got 10 minutes of “Spiders” and the the too-long chaos that follows “Handshake Drugs.” The rest of us who are feeling almost as old as Tweedy looks got “Via Chicago,” “Shot in the Arm,” and “California Stars.” So everybody’s happy. Even Tweedy.
