In today’s Wall Street Journal, Greg Hitt speculates on speculation of a surprise Lou Dobbs presidential campaign. First, Hitt cites Robert Novak citing Dobbs’ friends citing Dobbs saying he might run. Then, he cites the Wall Street Journal’s own John Fund citing Dobbs’ friends citing Dobbs saying he might run. (Later, Hitt cites Dobbs himself saying he isn’t planning to run.)

But Hitt’s best source is some dude who wrote some letter to the editor of some newspaper published wherever that guy lives. Writes Hitt:

“From Indiana to Arkansas to Pennsylvania, Mr. Dobbs has been trumpeted by regular Americans in letters to local newspapers as presidential timber. One writer even likened him to George Washington.”

Last time the WSJ speculated on a Dobbs campaign, Dobbs was compared to Network‘s “mad as hell” Howard Beale. Now, it’s a founding father. Next: Jesus?
