Yesterday evening, at around 6 p.m., D.C. police officers responded to a report of an assault in progress at Georgia and Gresham Place NW. When the officers arrived, they discovered that a man had been stabbed and had been transported—-by friends presumably—-to Howard University Hospital. According to the release: “Subsequently, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Chiagbanwe Ukaoma of Washington, DC”

The release goes on to state:

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim and three other people exited a carryout located at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Gresham Place, at which time they became involved in a physical altercation with another group of about five subjects that had been loitering in front of the carryout. During this altercation, the motive of which is unclear at this time, the victim sustained multiple stab wounds.”

The Post reports that three hours later, in an unrelated incident, a woman was struck with a stray bullet at 13th and Columbia Road NW.

Councilmember Jim Graham says the stabbing surely played a role in at least one aspect of the the 13th Street shooting. It took cops away from Columbia Heights:

“D.C. Council member Jim Graham (D-Ward 1) said that the area is “heavily patrolled” but that officers left to respond to the stabbing.”
