City Paper is not for tourists
While the rest of the world is vacationing, Marion S. Barry Jr. is hard at work—-spinning. The guy held a presser on Saturday to announce that he is asking for an investigation of the prosecutors who sought to jail him for failing to pay his taxes. Here’s the Washington Post on the matter:
“This is a victory for the people of the District of Columbia and myself and a defeat — a defeat, a defeat, a defeat — for the U.S. attorney’s office,” he said, labeling the prosecution attempt “despicable.” Barry (D-Ward 8) said he plans to send U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. a letter calling for an investigation into prosecutors’ conduct.
Well, how’s this for despicable:
*Between 1999 and 2004, Barry essentially whiffed on all federal and local taxes, paying nothing on about $500,000 in income. He received three years’ probation for the screwups.
*He whiffed again on his 2007 taxes, filing them earlier this year.
*He has used his kidney problems as an excuse for failing to pay up. Here’s what a dialysis patient had to say about that, according to WJLA-TV:
Longtime Barry acquaintance and dialysis patient, Oliver Johnson, also had questions. “If you can set on the machine for four hours, three times a week, you can get your taxes done while you’re dialyzing,” Johnson said.
So now he goes and attacks the prosecutors. What a great example for our city. When is someone on the council or the Fenty administration going to come out and speak up for standards, ethics, or whatever? Doesn’t anyone around here have the small measure of courage needed to scold this scofflaw?
