Sandra “SS” Seegars is one of the toughest constituents in the District of Columbia. A longtime activist, she has earned local fame in part by spearheading electoral recall campaigns. A 1995 effort against then-Ward 8 Councilmember Eydie Whittington fell short; a 1997 effort against then-Mayor Marion Barry also fell short.
Now come revelations that Barry is up to the same old, same old—-namely, using his official position and public monies to ingratiate himself with people he likes. And the veteran pol’s MO has landed him in trouble—-arrested by Park Police on July 4 for allegedly stalking an ingratiatee.
Does that kind of conduct warrant another recall petition campaign by SS? “No, ’cause people are not going to sign it,” says Seegars. “They making excuses for him. They don’t care what it is—-someone’s always out to get him, always setting him up.”
