WaPo just posted a curious story about a D.C. inmate who tried his own sexual assault case and won. The inmate had already been convicted of the rape and murder of a 77-year-old neighbor. But during a stint at the D.C. Jail, his cellmate accused him of sexual assault.

The inmate decided to try the case himself. He did have a defense attorney assisting him on the case. The big revelation comes not from the inmate winning his case—-the evidence was pretty weak; the victim had died a few years ago. No. The big revelation was what his defense attorney said at the end of the story. The attorney, Stuart Johnson, had this to say:

“I have a new appreciation if a client of mine in the future insists in rejecting a plea offer and go to trial. I’m going to listen to them even more than I normally would.”
