We the people love lists. Leonard Shapiro now gives us his Top 10 D.C. sportscasters over at washingtonpost.com.
Shapiro’s been around, so the sampling skews creaky. But I’m also creaky, and agree with most of the choices.
Most. Yet I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I ranked Glenn Brenner below George Michael in anything, as Shapiro does. But putting Warner Wolf at the head of the class sorta makes up for that. Michael came down to D.C. and basically added a DJ’s demeanor and a checkbook to the video-fetish act Wolf had perfected here earlier.
And, what, no Mike Wolfe?
(Stick around to the 4:00 mark on the embedded video up top for a taste of the party-boy Wolfe’s shtick — though this must be the only footage in existence of Wolfe not showing any chest hair. By then you’ll also be treated to shots of former WTOP sportscaster Sonny Jurgensen in vintage polyester. ’77 rules!)
(No surprise here: The Great Dan Steinberg already posted a Shapiro item.)
