City Paper is not for tourists
A package ignited at the “V Street annex building of the Brentwood Post Office in the 3300 block of V Street in Northeast around 2:45 p.m. Friday,” reports WTOP. The facility was set up in 2001 as a result of the anthrax attacks, which paralyzed mail delivery in D.C. and killed two postal workers at the Brentwood facility.
From WUSA9: “ATF officials say a mail sorter was tossing mail into a bin, when the package ignited on its own. Officials say the letter was addressed to Janet Napolitano.” TBD adds, “Sources also confirmed that a second suspicious package was found at the facility, but it did not ignite. Police reported there were no injuries.”
No injuries have been reported, but the incident bears similarities to the explosion of packages in two Maryland state government mailrooms on Thursday afternoon. V Street NE is closed between South Dakota Avenue NE and Bladensburg Road.
