When Is A Truck Not Just A Truck?: When it’s run by Chick-fil-A. The Southern fried chicken company with a cult following and a legacy of opposing gay marriage and catering to evangelical Christians plans to start up a mobile poultry operation here in D.C. That gave both people who love its chicken and people who hate its political activity a chance to battle. Another good reason to skip Chick-fil-A besides its repugnant vies on gay rights, of course, is that industrial chicken is nasty. -2
Hate Crime Suspect Nabbed: Authorities say they’ve arrested the person who shot a man at the IHOP in Columbia Heights earlier this month, and they’re charging the suspect with shooting the man specifically because he was gay. LawShawn Carson, 27, was charged with aggravated assault while armed, and the bias charge could add 50 percent more to any jail sentence if she’s convicted. The IHOP shooting was just one of a series of recent crimes targeting lesbian, gay, and transgender people in the city; more arrests could follow. +1
Shaken, Not Stirred: Last year’s Mineral, Va., earthquake is the temblor that just won’t quit. Another aftershock rumbled through the region late last night, strong enough at magnitude 3.1 to be felt in northern Virginia. The bad news: The coverage of the aftershock will be still more evidence to West Coast natives that the D.C. area isn’t ready for seismic primetime. The good news: We don’t have many earthquakes here. -1
Whole Lotto Love: The D.C. Lottery is quite excited about tomorrow’s Mega Millions drawing. And why not? The jackpot is up to $363 million, which will probably be enough to juice sales around the city—plopping some additional dollars into the lottery’s coffers. We don’t recommend playing, though; we’ve already purchased the winning ticket. +1
