Congrats are in order for Laura Norton Amico, the crime reporter who cofounded Homicide Watch, an independent blog that tracks murder cases in the District. The site and Amico’s work have been lauded for paying attention to the deaths that don’t get much notice in the press. Now Amico has been selected as a 2013 Nieman Fellow—one of 24 journalists who will pursue independent projects for a year at Harvard University.

Amico plans to study “criminal justice journalism in the digital age, focusing on best practices, useful tools, and new models for crime and courts reporting.”

And as for Homicide Watch, Amico says that the site won’t be going anywhere when she and her husband and partner Chris Amico head up to Cambridge in August. “We are in discussions with local universities and newsrooms and are hopeful that we’ll find the right partnership that will not only keep the site up and running, but help it to thrive and grow,” Amico tells us. “We hope to announce a partnership soon and welcome a new Homicide Watch reporter to the beat!”
