A new inductee into the upper Style ranks! Washington Post Weekend-section music writer David Malitz, who has been at the paper since 2004, is replacing Joe Heim as the Style section’s pop culture editor, per an internal memo from the paper.
“If you can’t find him at the Black Cat after hours, you can probably find him bemoaning the fate of his beloved Washington Wizards and Pittsburgh Pirates,” reads the memo.
According to the memo, Malitz will handle Style’s music, television, and film critics, and have a large role in producing Going Out Guide.
Heim was promoted to be an editor for the Post Magazine in May, but he’s stayed on as pop culture editor in the interim. Memo after the jump:
We are delighted to announce that David Malitz will be joining Style as the Pop Culture Editor.
David is steeped in pop culture, passionate about television, pop music and film, which he studied at the University in Maryland. In the eight years he has worked at The Post, he has written about popular music for Weekend, Style and the Going Out Guide. Not only has he provided in-depth coverage of the D.C. music scene, but he has interviewed the likes of Brian Wilson and Aretha Franklin, reviewed concerts by everyone from Paul McCartney to Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen, and blogged from SXSW Festival in Austin. David has also launched and helmed washingtonpost.com’s pop music blogs (Post Rock, then Click Track) for more than four years.
David will report to Frances and will be working with Style’s popular music, film and TV critics, whose journalism appears in daily Style, Sunday Style and Weekend. As we work to create more cohesive pop culture coverage online and across the sections of the newspaper, David will also play a lead role in coordinating with Going out Guide/Weekend.
David has lived in the D.C. area for his entire life. If you can’t find him at the Black Cat after hours, you can probably find him bemoaning the fate of his beloved Washington Wizards and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Please join us in welcoming David to Style.
