Hurricane Sandy has just started in earnest, but Pepco’s outage map is already reporting almost 3,000 customers without power, most of them in the District.

According to the company, 2,851 customers have lost power so far. Of those, 1,667 are in D.C., with the rest in Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.

To the south, Virginia utility Dominion is reporting that a few thousand customers have lost power, with a majority of them in Fairfax County.

Of course, the question with a storm this major—-and the issue behind a lot of anger at Pepco after the derecho—-isn’t whether people lose power, but how long it eventually takes for power to be restored.
