Kids these days! Just when we got over them throwing rocks at buses, one of them stole a running Metropolitan Police Department cruiser this afternoon, then quickly crashed it.
In news first broken by Titan of Trinidad, an unknown juvenile stole the cruiser at around 12:30 p.m. on the 3900 block of R St. SE. The bold thief didn’t get far, though. The driver crashed the cruiser into a fence almost immediately after stealing it, according to MPD spokeswoman Officer Tisha Gant.
Gant didn’t know the cruiser’s condition after the crash. The would-be car thief, meanwhile, remains at-large.
Gant wouldn’t say why the cruiser was left running in the first place, but the Washington Times‘ Andrea Noble reports that the officer driving the car was responding to a 911 call that had been abruptly ended. Appropriately, the officer previously worked in an auto theft unit, according to Noble.
