And now, some news about where your news is written: Washington City Paper is moving in early May from our Adams Morgan office to 1400 I St. NW.

City Paper has been at 2390 Champlain St. NW since 1993, but our building—which also houses WPFW-FM and BTN Systems—is slated to be torn down this year as part of the construction of a new luxury hotel attached to the First Church of Christ, Scientist, at the corner of Euclid and Champlain streets. (That project has been somewhat controversial, in part because of a $46 million tax break the D.C. Council awarded its developers, but also in part due to some opposition to its design and size.)

So for the next year and a half, we’ll be subletting space downtown while we look for a more permanent home.

In the interests of full disclosure: We’ll be subleasing some office space rented by National Strategies Inc., a lobbying and consulting firm that doesn’t have business interests that affect the District directly. As an example of the type of work the firm does, lobbying disclosure forms show it was paid $1.9 million last year by Bidzina Ivanishvili, the prime minister of Georgia, to work on oil and gas issues. For now, though, we have no plans to start covering Tbilisi or international energy policy. If we do find that we’re writing about something that intersects with our landlords’ interests, of course we’ll disclose that.

The new location, directly above the McPherson Square Metro stop, will put us closer to the Wilson Building and to the offices where many of our readers spend their days, though leaving the neighborhood where the paper has been located for 20 years will mean we’ve all got to find new routes to work and new places to eat and drink nearby.

“We will miss our Adams Morgan neighbors deeply, we loved being a part of everything from the local Business Improvement District to planning festivals together and figuring out where to go for lunch,” says publisher Amy Austin. “That said, we’re looking forward to exploring around our new digs and the continued search for our long-term home.”
