When the Washington Examiner launched in D.C. in 2005, its most immediate impact was on lawns. The frequently unsolicited red-sleeved papers earned a probe from an Arlington county supervisor and complaints from readers. “I did not request it, and do not want it, at all, ever,” one accidental subscribers wrote to the paper.
While the paper stopped Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday home delivery in 2008, it had kept delivering papers on Thursday—-until today. An editors’ note on the cover of today’s Examiner notes that today is the last weekday home delivery of the paper. Next Sunday will be the paper’s final Sunday edition as well.
“Today is the last day that you will receive a home-delivered of The Washington Examiner on Thursday,” the note reads. “We deeply appreciate your support since our introduction in 2005, and we hope you will continue reading us every day at washingtonexaminer.com.”
The end of home delivery is part of the transition to a weekly political magazine targeted at “key influencers,” a move that resulted in 87 layoffs at the paper. The newly retooled Examiner will launch on June 17, according to an internal Examiner memo.
