A vandal with a abstract-expressionist streak splattered green paint on the Lincoln Memorial overnight, according to U.S. Park Police. Park Police Capt. Steven Booker told CNN that the police were alerted to the incident just before 1:30 a.m. A National Park Service spokesperson told reporters this morning that workers are removing the paint and the memorial could be opened as early as today
This particular act of vandalism seems unlikely to reverberate through art history: The marks—a splatter of seafoam green across Lincoln’s left leg and one arm of his chair, with the tiniest bit staining the top of his trousers—seem to demonstrate neither a political nor an aesthetic agenda.
