A Metro train struck and killed a 21-year-old George Mason University athlete early Sunday morning while he was on the Orange line tracks in between the East Falls Church and Ballston stops.

Patrick Sibley, a rising senior, was a volleyball player and is being remembered by the University as a “world-class athlete.”

“The Mason community is deeply saddened to hear of the death of Patrick Sibley,” Athletic Director Tom O’Connor says in a release.  “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, his friends, teammates, and all who are affected by this tragedy.”

The accident occurred around 2 a.m. and WMATA said it is currently investigating why Sibley was on the tracks.
