The National Zoo’s famously pregnant panda Mei Xiang delivered a cub at 5:32 p.m.

The birth came earlier than expected. The Zoo announced that she went into labor around 4 p.m. Friday and warned the live panda cam watchers that the labor could take up to 10 hours.
Update, 7:42 p.m. The National Zoo tweeted the above photo of the the newborn panda and its mother.
