Metropolitan Police Department officials have released the names of seven of the 12 people killed, allegedly by Aaron Alexis, in today’s shooting at the Navy Sea Systems Command headquarters at the Navy Yard. Five other victims’ names were still being withheld as of 10:50 p.m.
The names released Monday night:
- Michael Arnold, 59
- Sylvia Frasier, 53
- Kathy Gaarde, 62
- John Roger Johnson, 73
- Frank Kohler, 50
- Kenneth Bernard Proctor, 46
- Vishnu Pandit, 61
Authorities say they now believe Alexis was the only shooter in the Navy Yard rampage, the deadliest single incident in the District since 78 people died when Air Florida flight 90 crashed into the 14th Street Bridge on Jan. 13, 1982. There is no need to shelter in place anymore near the Navy Yard, officials say.
“This is a horrific tragedy,” Mayor Vince Gray said at an evening press conference.
