The man who authorities believe set himself on fire on the National Mall Friday died of his injuries later that evening, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed Saturday.

Because of the severity of the burns, authorities have not yet been able to identify the victim and will use dental and DNA analysis to do so, according to D.C. police spokesman Araz Alali.

Alali says authorities have been talking to witnesses to the incident and the preliminary investigation suggests that the man started the fire himself.

“The preliminary investigation at this juncture so far as indicated that he may have set himself on fire,” he says.

On Friday at 4:24 p.m. the D.C. Fire Department received a call that the man was on fire in the National Mall at 7th Street and Independence Avenue SW. He was later transported by helicopter to the Washington Hospital Center, where he died shortly before 9 p.m.
