NBC4 is reporting that police found a male body today at Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens—-the park officials have been searching in the case of missing 8-year-old Relisha Rudd. Police have not yet identified the body, NBC4 reports. Metropolitan Police Department officials are holding a press conference at 3 p.m.
Officials have been searching the park since Thursday for signs of Relisha, who was last seen with Kahlil Tatum, a janitor at the homeless shelter where Relisha lives with her mother. Relisha was last seen on March 1 with Tatum, according to MPD Chief Cathy Lanier. On March 2, police say, Tatum purchased large trash bags and was soon after spotted at the 700-acre park in Northeast D.C.
Officials would not elaborate on what Tatum was doing in the park. Lanier said at a press conference at the park last Thursday that officials were still holding out hope that Relisha is still alive and and are also searching for the missing girl across several states.
Tatum works as a janitor at the homeless shelter at the old D.C. General hospital site where Relisha was living with her family. Her mother let Tatum spend time with her daughter, even allowing him to take her off of the shelter’s site. Authorities have said officials at Daniel A. Payne Elementary School were told that Relisha was in the care of a “Dr. Tatum” when she’d been absent.
On March 20, the dead body of Tatum’s wife was found in a hotel room in Oxon Hill during the search for Relisha. Officials issued an Amber Alert for Relisha that same day in D.C., but officials in Maryland and Virginia say they were not initially contacted by District officials to issue the alert in their states.
The FBI is offering rewards that lead to the return of Relisha and the arrest and indictment of Tatum.
