The city government is still working out regulations that would govern ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft, but in the meantime, Uber is expanding its business in D.C. without a care.

Uber is launching uberFamily in D.C. today, which will allow customers to request a vehicle equipped with a car seat for children. uberFamily is available through both the UberX and pricier Black Car services. Riders will pay the typical car service fee plus a $10 surcharge for the car seat.

The $10 fee will be waived for the first week.

The car will come with one forward-facing car seat for a child who is at least 12 months old and 22 pounds. A child who is 48 pounds or 52 inches will be too big for the seat. Uber drivers who have the seats in their vehicles are trained on how to safely secure them.

“We get it—-parenting in DC is a monumental task,” Uber’s website read. “Starting today, Uber is making your life easier with the launch of uberFamily, the on-demand car seat option for parents on the go.”

Uber acknowledges that the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends kids remain rear-facing in car seats until at least 24 months. But the company says it opted for this route because “this is a much better option than no car seat at all!”
