The Pigskins Shame Spiral is an occasional feature tracking developments related to the name of D.C.’s beloved football team.

Who: Hillary Clinton, 2016 presidential candidate?

Change the name? Yes, the former secretary of state said in an interview with Fusion’s Jorge Ramos that she “would love to see the owners think hard” about a substitute name.

Why? Ramos asked Clinton if she thought the team name was a racial slur. Clinton didn’t go quite so far: “I think it is insensitive and I think that there is no reason for it to continue as the name of a team in our nation’s capital,” she said.

Shame Spiral rating: Finger Wag. If this tepid response is any indication, then Clinton is definitely running for president. I think we can all agree there are a whole lot of things we’d like to see Dan Snyder think hard about. Clinton’s hesitation to say more than the equivalent of putting Snyder in a timeout to think about his actions brings up the question: Will the controversy of the Washington football team’s name be a question asked of 2016 presidential candidates?

Oh, and the team name isn’t any more “insensitive” just because it is located in the nation’s capital.
