Native-born Washingtonians have never made up more than half of D.C.’s population since 1900, according to statistics from Census microdata. The New York Times compiled this microdata today for an interesting, interactive infographic mapping out how Americans have moved between states from 1900 through 2012.

Unsurprisingly, the data backs up the received wisdom that D.C. is a transient city. According to the data,  D.C. has one of the largest populations of newcomers in the United States, third to only Nevada and Florida. And in 2012, the largest group of residents not born in the District didn’t come from neighboring Virginia or Maryland, but from New York. (Unless you count every other country in the world as one group, in which case that’s 16 percent of the residents.)

2012

  • 37 percent of Washingtonians were born in D.C.
  • 5 percent of Washingtonians were born in New York
  • 4 percent of Washingtonians were born in Virginia
  • 4 percent of Washingtonians were born in Maryland
  • 16 percent of Washingtonians were born outside of the United States

2000

  • 39 percent of Washingtonians were born in D.C.
  • 5 percent of Washingtonians were born in New York
  • 5 percent of Washingtonians were born in Virginia
  • 4 percent of Washingtonians were born in Maryland
  • 14 percent of Washingtonians were born outside of the United States

1980

  • 39 percent of Washingtonians were born in D.C.
  • 7 percent of Washingtonians were born in Virginia
  • 4 percent of Washingtonians were born in Maryland
  • 5 percent of Washingtonians were born in New York
  • 7 percent of Washingtonians were born outside of the United States

1900

  • 43 percent of Washingtonians were born in the District Columbia
  • 16 percent of Washingtonians were born in Virginia
  • 14 percent of Washingtonians were born in Maryland
  • 3 percent of Washingtonians were born in New York
  • 8 percent of Washingtonians were born outside of the United States
