The Pigskins Shame Spiral is an occasional feature tracking developments related to the name of D.C.’s beloved football team.

Who:  This fan of the Washington football team, who apparently does not think the team name, or much else, is racist.

Change the name? We’re going to guess that he does not want the team name changed.

Why? He probably doesn’t have a good reason.

Shame Spiral Rating: This enthusiastic fan inadvertently shows—-in bright colors—-why it’s time to change the name. Dan Snyder and his most loyal followers argue that the name is an homage to Native Americans. These very public arguments have apparently made at least one fan think it’s acceptable to paint his face red to honor Native American heritage. But, just like there is nothing respectful about honoring an entire population with a term considered an offensive name for them, there’s nothing respectful about painting your face to become a caricature of a population. Even Snyder would have a hard time arguing that dressing up like this is tolerable. Right?
