MedStar Washington Hospital Center is investigating an incident involving a patient and two security officers that resulted in the patient’s death last week, according to a statement.

The incident occurred when a patient reportedly attempted to leave the hospital on Tuesday, Sep. 29 without being discharged by officials. While two MedStar security officers were escorting the patient back to the center, an “interaction” occurred, resulting in critical injuries for the patient, who was sent to the emergency department for “immediate care.”

MedStar contacted the Metropolitan Police Department that evening, and an investigation into the incident began Wednesday. The patient, who has not been identified, died the following day.

The investigation is ongoing, and the two officers involved in the incident are currently on administrative leave, according to MedStar’s statement.

“We will be conducting a thorough internal review as well, both of the entire care process and also of the policies, procedures, training and education of our security team,” says MedStar spokesperson Dr. Arthur St. André, a surgical care specialist. “We are all taking this situation very seriously.”
