Repent, D.C. residents, for Mike Huckabee is clear: The Republican presidential candidate, former governor of Arkansas, and (maybe this has something to do with it) Christian minister believes the District is “Sin City”—the veritable “Vegas of the East.”
Huckabee gave D.C. those moralizing monikers in a video he released yesterday, before CNN’s Republican debate airs tonight in Las Vegas. On the face of it, it seems like he’s perpetuating the D.C.-vs.-Main Street narrative that others have readily employed:
“Sin City, it’s where liars cheat, crooks and thieves make a living. Futures are destroyed. Families are ruined. Risky and selfish bets. I’m not talking about Las Vegas, but our nation’s capitol, Washington D.C. Politicians have done enough lying and stealing. It’s time to burn down the corrupt Washington political machine, the Vegas of the East. Put Americans first.”
Of course, the last time a marauding invader burned D.C., it was 1814. Maybe he just wants to put a fresh coat of paint on the White House in the event he occupies it.
