Forbes Graham, a trumpeter who played in D.C. bands XthoughtstreamsX and Heth, appears on the new reissue of Irepress‘ Samus Octology, an album that’s required listening for anyone interested in the whole instru-metal-meets-whatsis scene. Seriously, folks: this is how it’s done. The metal punishes. The jazz and dub cleanse the palette. And then the metal punishes some more. The record reminds me of all of those proggy bands coming out of Richmond, Va., in the late 80s and early 90s (see: Breadwinner, Sliang Laos, and Alter Natives). Except, this Boston-based instrumental act never lets the math get in the way of the groove. It’s just excellent, excellent stuff. (Samples from the CD are streaming on the band’s MySpace page.)
