Those up for a NYC trek next week can catch ex-D.C. band Girls Against Boys performing its best record (not to mention one of the best records to come out of the D.C. punk scene) Venus Luxure No.1 Baby. The July 20 show at Bowery Ballroom is one of those Don’t Look Back concerts, a series that asks a band to, um, well, look back. Also a part of the NYC series: Slint performing Spiderland (7/17) and Sonic Youth performing Daydream Nation (7/28).

Venus Luxure is a less celebrated record, for sure. That said, I recently repurchased the thing on vinyl and would be hard-pressed to name too many slabs of hard rock that are as consistent. These guys just nailed it and, especially if the band’s major label dalliance and Jade Tree fallout retroactively colored your image, it’s definitely time to revisit the thing.

Back in the day—or at least as recent as House of GVSB—they were still a tight-as-a-vice-grip live act.
