Organizers behind the third annual Can a Sista Rock A Mic? Festival have just announced their headliner: Georgia Anne Muldrow (pictured). The all-female festival will take place from August 7 through August 12, at various locations in the District. You can check out more info here.
Muldrow is an accomplished musician, singer, rapper, and all-around freak. Her debut album for Stones Throw, Olesi: Fragments of an Earth, was comprised of outsider soul nuggets. Listening to it is like listening to the weirdest moments Funkadelic never got around to trying out. The record managed to be both breathtaking, smoked-out, and frustrating all at once. It melts the dot off of India.Arie’s name. Here she will be performing with her partner Dudley Perkins as G&D. I guess the fest is making an exception to the all-female rule.
Perkins rides a similar moonbeam. His spoken raps and freaked-out Madlib productions lend the ultra introspection of the backpackers a much-needed soulful humor. You can check out a video of his work with Muldrow here. According to the press release, “G&D will be headlining the opening event ‘Beauty and the Beat:’ D.C.’s first ever “lady beat maker” competition. The event will also feature visual art and DJ Earth1ne on the decks and will take place on August 8th at 8:30PM (doors at 7) at the Rock & Roll Hotel.”
This could be the jam of the summer!
