The 9:30 Club hosts the ultimate postmodern concert experience tonight: Brendon Small of Dethklok (of Metalocalypse fame) playing a set backed by the Paul Green School of Rock All-Stars. That’s right, the guy fronting a band covering a cartoon band is now the guy fronting a group of rock students covering a band covering a cartoon band. (This totally one-ups Gorillaz.) Expect a generous helping of accessible, melodic death metal – it might hard to take a show like this seriously, but that’s not really the point. Besides, Dethklok’s 2007 record The Dethalbum was chock full of catchy hooks and headbanging opportunities galore, hurt only by a tepid vocal performance – Small plays all the instruments competently, but he could stand to hire a dedicated growler. But hey, maybe one of those All-Stars is training to be the next great extreme metal vocalist, in which case a great show is a sure bet.
Openers are Tragedy: A Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees. Show at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St NW, 7pm, $15.
