The inestimable Brian Duss has produced gaza:comp, a two-disc benefit CD to raise funds and awareness for the Rafah Rehabilitation Center, a deaf and handicapped kids school in the Gaza Strip.
gaza:comp features 31 songs including tracks from punk icon Mike Watt, Medications, Beauty Pill, Aquarium, French Toast Records’ Les Savy Fav, Palestinian musician Bashir Taha, MC Head-Roc and many others.
Duss has spent the last decade working in various DC non-profits as well as playing music and setting up benefit concerts, art shows and film screenings with community development group Positive Force, DC. Duss also spent a year working in the West Bank & Gaza as a photographer, videographer, and writer for an international development agency that helps fund the school’s work in Gaza providing services to special needs children in the area.
When asked about the event and the compilation, Duss said:
I feel like gaza:comp is my submission for a best mix-CD of all time contest. Les Savy Fav, Mike Watt, This Bike is a Pipe Bomb- It’s ridiculous.
Monday’s show is about more than just three bands from the album, but how I want to give back to the DC scene that helped educate me as an activist and helped inspire me to go work in Israel & Palestine in the first place. “Where you’re treasure is, there your heart will be also;” it may sound cheesy, but I’m trying to put my money where my mouth is.
The Black Cat release party is tonight at 9:00 pm with performances by IBID, Cat Furniture and Head-Roc w/ DJ Gavin Holland. Admission is $8.
